I ni k3! (Hello!) I am an advocate at heart and currently working as a Workforce Development Specialist at the United States Department of Labor, specifically with Job Corps centers across the region. I am a Worcester native, graduating from Abby Kelley Foster Highschool and moving to Providence, RI to attend Rhode Island College and ultimately graduating with a B.A in Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience. I am currently obtaining my MPA/MAAP degree at Suffolk University, hoping to transition into a government official after I graduate.
I am seeking to create a pipeline of growth and opportunities to help young women maximize their potential and attain their goals. I desire to serve my community in some capacity, while focusing on improving policies, programs, regulatory guidelines and best practices. This desire was ignited within me from my time serving in the Peace Corps, in Guinea, West Africa.
Translating what I learned in Guinea to the States, I’ve been able to take on multiple leadership roles. I am currently the Chair of the City of Worcester’s Status of Women Advisory Board, a member of the United Way Women’s Initiative Leadership Council and their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, a board member for the YWCA, a commissioner for the MA status of Women, and I was fortunate to start a program, along with two friends, where we put on events where we have have thought-provoking and open dialogue on an array of topics blended through education, experience and empowerment.
When my work hat comes off, I enjoy getting dressed up and going out to fancy brunches, taking pictures, laughing and being spontaneous in my activity choices.
Please tell us about your current career and what you love most about what you do?
I currently work for the U.S Department of Labor, specifically with the Job Corps programs throughout the Boston region. I am a contracting officer representative, managing Job Corp center contracts and carrying out monitoring and evaluation of center operations. The most fulfilling part about my job is engaging in conversations with students, understanding their needs, proposing solutions to help them succeed and ultimately watching them thrive.
What is your favorite restaurant in Worcester, and what is your favorite dish?
My favorite restaurant in Worcester is Unique Cafe. It is a Jamaican-American restaurant. My favorite dish is their oxtail meal that comes with white rice, mac & cheese and plantains. It’s the perfect amount of flavor and spice. I guess I am a bit bias, as my mother Nadine James owns this very restaurant.
Who is the most interesting person you’ve ever met?
I’ve come across many interesting people, but Carol Seager is definitely at the top of the list. She has such a great personality, always willing to advise, share her stories and make me laugh! She is definitely special!
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere in the world right now it would be to Thailand to visit an elephant sanctuary. I’ve always fantasized of caring for elephants, and bathing and feeding them, amongst other activities.
What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
I love Maverick City. They are a gospel group who are known for group writing and worship sessions. They are relatable, passionate and care about Jesus and His people. They are definitely my go to!
What is your best advice?
Be filled, so you can fill others.
What is one of the top three items on your Bucket List?
Host a Gala, go on an African Safari and ride in a Hot Air Balloon.
What current/former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Worcester?
Unique Cafe, bringing people together one plate at a time and Tropical Bath Body, I love the creativity and smells of their products!
Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative with whom would you love to have lunch? Why?
I would love to have lunch with AOC. The mere fact that she took a step to volunteer which ultimately changed her life is inspiring. From a waitress to a politician–seeing her drive and passion to advocate, along with her knowledge of policy is a great motivation.
Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I will have successfully completed my dual degree of MPA/MAAP at Suffolk University, and will begin transitioning into campaigning for a seat as a councilwoman here in the City of Worcester. I will continue to advocate, start a for-profit organization for youth and gear up to become a part of the MA Senate.
What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you, even your friends or family.
I am a picture hoarder! The secret is out! I love creating memories and capturing them to reminisce later.
What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Love, Laughter and Expansion.
If a motion picture was made of your life, what actor/actress would you choose to play you?
Kerri Washington (Olivia Pope)! She dominates the screen every time.
What is your favorite thing or something unique about Worcester?
I love the sense of unity throughout Worcester. It’s a small city with big dreams, and I believe the individuals here, including myself, are all willing to push the City forward!
What is your favorite smell?
I love the smell of lavender. It’s super relaxing.
Who inspires you to be better?
My younger sister, Khaaliyah, inspires me to be better. We have a special bond and knowing that she looks up to me and is carefully watching my steps, makes me grounded and pushes me to keep going in times of adversity. I want Khaaliyah to know that she is loved, thought about and that I want the best for her. I want her to know that there is no limit to her greatness and that starts with me paving a path to ensure her success.
